Police regularly target, harass, and assault sex workers or people they think are sex workers , such as trans women of color. The police usually get away with the abuse because sex workers fear being arrested if they report. Protecting sex workers from police violence is just one of the reasons we need to decriminalize sex work. It would also help sex workers access health care, lower the risk of violence from clients, reduce mass incarceration, and advance equality in the LGBTQ community, especially for trans women of color, who are often profiled and harassed whether or not we are actually sex workers.
Is One of the Most-Cited Statistics About Sex Work Wrong?
Sex worker - Wikipedia
Sex work is "the exchange of sexual services , performances, or products for material compensation. The transaction must take place between consenting adults who are of the legal age and mental capacity to consent and must take place without any methods of coercion. Furthermore, some prefer the use of the term because it seemingly grants more agency to the sellers of these services. Due to the legal status of some forms of sex work and the stigma associated with sex work, the population is difficult to access; thus there has been relatively little academic research done on the topic. Furthermore, the vast majority of academic literature on sex work focuses on prostitution , and to a lesser extent, exotic dancing ; there is little research on other forms of sex work. These findings cannot necessarily be generalized to other forms of sex work.
Statistics have a reputation for being dull, but this one packs a punch. In only nine words, it conjures up a story worthy of Dickens. Hear that statistic, and you can't help but imagine the faces of children, as fragile and guileless as porcelain dolls; you imagine, too, the fear on those faces, and the violence that will be done to them to feed the greed and perverted desires of figures lurking in the shadows. Those nine words tell you that this is not a story that is the exception, but rather, the norm in the industry. A person would have to have a rare degree of monstrousness not to feel their heart break, just a little, on hearing such cruelty described so starkly.
A sex worker is a person who is employed in the sex industry. Phone sex operators have sexually-oriented conversations with clients, and may do verbal sexual roleplay. Other sex workers are paid to engage in live sexual performance, such as webcam sex and performers in live sex shows.
